The lack of funding came after negotiations broke down due to Democratic indignation over federal immigration agents killing two demonstrators in Minneapolis. According to officials familiar with the negotiations, who were cited by the AFP news agency, the incident interfered with discussions on new appropriations for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).

A number of non-essential government operations are scheduled to halt until lawmakers approve a stopgap or full-year funding measure if no agreement is reached before the deadline. When the House reconvenes, congressional leaders are working to get enough support to approve the Senate-backed agreement.

Just 11 weeks have passed since the end of the previous funding freeze, which lasted 43 days and was the longest shutdown in American history. This is the second government shutdown of the past year. the past.

Since several federal departments already have funding for the entire year through September 30 of the fiscal year, the current shutdown’s scope is more limited. According to Bloomberg, this includes the Department of Agriculture, which makes sure food stamp programs run smoothly, as well as the Department of National Parks, Veterans Services, and Justice.

The Treasury, Defense, Homeland Security, Transportation, Health and Human Services, and Labor departments are among the important agencies that still need to start formal shutdown procedures during the funding freeze, according to the White House, which cited the Office of Management and Bloomberg’s budget memo.

If the House approves the funding bill earlier in the day, government operations could resume as early as Monday, according to an administration official.
