According to the BBC and CBS News, the US government may experience a brief partial shutdown beginning on Saturday, but lawmakers say it could end as early as next week if the House approves a funding plan supported by the Senate.
According to President Donald Trump, Republicans and Democrats have reached a consensus on five significant spending bills that affect the federal court system, the Treasury, health and human services, and defense. (AP) In order to allow for additional talks, the Senate decided to extend funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) for two weeks while funding the majority of federal agencies through September.
According to the BBC, President Donald Trump announced that Republicans and Democrats had reached a consensus on five significant spending bills, including those pertaining to the federal court system, the Treasury, health and human services, and defense. Democrats’ demands for more control over immigration enforcement led to the removal of DHS funding from the package.
The plan was approved by the Senate late on Friday local time, but it still needs to be approved by the House. Funding for some agencies is anticipated to run out by midnight due to the absence of House lawmakers until Monday, resulting in a temporary partial shutdown, according to CBS News.
How long might the shutdown last? According to CBS News, if the House approves the bill early next week, it will probably only last the weekend and cause little immediate disruption.

Long shutdowns like the 43-day one that occurred last year are not something Washington is interested in.
There won’t be any impact on services; the shutdown will be partial rather than total. According to CNN, numerous agencies have already obtained funding for the remainder of the fiscal year. The US Postal Service, national parks, Smithsonian museums, the National Zoo, Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and SNAP benefits will all continue to operate.
While many will continue to work unpaid until funding is restored, essential federal employees, such as air traffic controllers, TSA officers, immigration agents, and law enforcement personnel, will remain on duty, according to CNN.
According to CNN, staffing stress may cause delays in air travel. Some federal loan processing and administrative services may be suspended, and hundreds of thousands of federal employees may be furloughed or temporarily without pay.
