A Delhi court has granted a 13-day interim bail to Khalid Saifi, who is accused in the larger conspiracy case related to the 2020 northeast Delhi riots, subject to several conditions, including refraining from social media engagement.
The court has provided relief to Khalid Saifi from February 6 to February 13, 2026, upon the submission of a personal bond amounting to ₹20,000. Additional Sessions Judge Sameer Bajpai was presiding over the interim bail application submitted by Saifi, the founder of United Against Hate, to attend his nephew’s wedding and observe Ramadan with his family.
In an order dated January 29, the court stated, “The applicant (Saifi), upon his release, shall not contact any witnesses. Furthermore, the applicant is prohibited from leaving the Delhi and NCR region during the interim bail period. Additionally, the applicant shall not engage with the media and shall refrain from any activities on social media or incur any costs.”
The court has granted this relief by allowing a personal bond from February 6 to February 13, 2026, in the amount of ₹20,000, along with two sureties of the same amount.
“Considering all the facts and circumstances of the case, the court finds it just and appropriate to grant the relief sought by the petitioner (Saifi),” remarked the judge.
The communal clashes in North-East Delhi escalated on February 24, 2020, resulting in the deaths of at least 53 individuals and nearly 700 injuries, as violence erupted between supporters of the citizenship law and protesters.
According to a First Information Report (FIR) registered at the Jagat Puri police station, a mob assembled at Masjidwali Gali in the Khureji Khas area of Northeast Delhi on February 26, 2020.
The mob disregarded police orders to disperse, hurled stones, and assaulted police personnel, as stated in the FIR, which also noted that some individuals fired upon head constable Yograj.
The prosecution alleges that Saifi and former Dr. Congress Councilor Ishrat Jahan incited an ‘unlawful assembly.’
